What is Orthodontics?
Orthodontics is the dental specialty concerned with the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of misaligned teeth and jaws. It is not just about aesthetics – straight teeth are far easier to clean, significantly reduce the risk of tooth decay and gum disease, and relieve stress on the jaw joints and chewing muscles. Misalignments often arise from genetics, early loss of baby teeth, thumb-sucking habits or growth disorders. Around 40% of all children and teenagers have a clinically relevant misalignment. Orthodontic treatment is, however, successful at any age.
Braces & Treatment Methods at a Glance
Which method is right for you or your child depends on the clinical findings, age and your personal preferences. We will advise you in detail and create an individual treatment plan.
Clear Aligners – Invisible Braces
Transparent plastic aligners move teeth step by step into the desired position – nearly invisible and removable for eating and cleaning your teeth. Ideal for teenagers and adults who value a discreet treatment. The aligners are changed every 1–2 weeks and must be worn for at least 22 hours per day.
- Nearly invisible – ideal for work and everyday life
- Removable – no restrictions when eating
- Easy oral hygiene – no cleaning around brackets
- Treatment duration: avg. 12–18 months (depending on findings)
- Digital 3D planning – see your result before treatment starts
Fixed Braces (Brackets)
The classic fixed brace with brackets and arch wires is the most versatile and precise method for correcting misaligned teeth. It is suitable for virtually all types of misalignment and delivers reliable, stable results. Available with metal brackets (silver) or aesthetic ceramic brackets (tooth-coloured).
- Suitable for virtually all degrees of misalignment
- Metal brackets (silver) or ceramic brackets (tooth-coloured)
- Maximum precision even in complex cases
- Prerequisite for the free-of-charge ÖGK brace scheme
- Treatment duration: avg. 18–36 months
Lingual Braces – Fixed on the Inside
With lingual braces, individually crafted brackets are bonded to the inside (lingual surface) of the teeth. From the outside the brace is completely invisible – with full orthodontic effectiveness. Particularly suited to adults with high aesthetic demands in their professional or personal life.
- Completely invisible – undetectable from the outside
- Individual brackets – custom-made for each tooth
- Suitable for almost all types of misalignment
- Short adjustment period for speech
- Suitable for all age groups
Removable Appliances (Children)
For children in the mixed dentition phase (approx. 6–12 years) in whom not all permanent teeth have erupted yet, removable appliances are used. They guide jaw growth in the right direction and can shorten or even eliminate the need for subsequent fixed treatment.
- Used in the milk dentition and early mixed dentition
- Guides jaw growth
- Lower compliance demands than aligners
- Often used as preparation for fixed treatment
- Early diagnostic check-up recommended from age 4
How Orthodontic Treatment Works
Initial Consultation & Examination
Comprehensive examination of teeth and jaw. X-rays (OPG, FRS), digital photographs and, where appropriate, a 3D scan. Discussion of treatment options, duration and costs. The initial consultation is free of charge and non-binding.
Diagnostics & Treatment Planning
Evaluation of all findings and preparation of an individual treatment and cost plan. For aligner treatment: digital 3D simulation of the result – you can see your outcome before treatment begins. Determination of IOTN grade for health insurance reimbursement applications.
Fitting the Brace
Bonding of brackets (fixed appliance) or issue of the first set of aligner trays. Thorough instructions on care, wearing time and guidelines. On request we provide an invoice for submission to your health insurer.
Check-up Appointments
Regular check-ups every 4–8 weeks (brackets) or every 6–10 weeks (aligners) to monitor treatment progress and adjust arch wires or issue new aligner sets.
Completion & Retention
Removal of the brace once the treatment goal has been achieved. Fabrication of retainer trays or a fixed retainer wire (bonded behind the teeth) to stabilise the result long-term. Without retention, teeth can drift back towards their original position.
Costs & Health Insurance
The cost of orthodontic treatment is based on the Austrian Dental Chamber fee schedule and the individual findings and chosen method. Under Austrian dental chamber law we are not permitted to publish prices online – after a detailed diagnostic assessment we will be happy to provide you with a transparent treatment and cost plan.
Free Braces (Children up to 18)
Children and teenagers up to 18 years of age with a severe misalignment (IOTN grade 4 or 5) are entitled to fixed braces with silver brackets at the expense of the ÖGK. Requirement: treatment by an ÖGK-contracted orthodontist.
Book a consultationHealth Insurance Contribution (Adults)
Adults can apply to their health insurer for a cost contribution. The amount varies by insurer: ÖGK approx. €724 / year · BVAEB up to €3,500 one-off · KFA & SVS: individual. Aligners are generally not subsidised by the ÖGK.
Request invoiceTax Deductibility
Orthodontic treatment costs can – where medically justified – be claimed in the annual income tax assessment under 'extraordinary expenses'. We will provide all necessary documentation.
Request cost planOrthodontic treatment is invoiced to you directly. On request we will issue an invoice for submission to your health insurer (ÖGK, BVAEB, KFA, SVS). Children with IOTN grade 4 or 5 may be entitled to free fixed braces (silver brackets) through an ÖGK-contracted orthodontist.
